Scratch's "remix tree" visualization page, from which the remix tree got its name. The tree has now become so sprawling as to break the render; it goes through the bottom of the box.

The remix tree is a branching tree of remices on Scratch. It started with [WARRIORS AMV] Despacito :3 and now has a frankly absurd amount of branches and projects, seeming to never end. Though largely inane, over the years it has gained recurring characters, spinoffs, and even the occasional story arc, mostly set in the remix world.

It's hard, though possible, to understand the entirety of the remix tree. A complete list of remix media is available at List of remix media, or in spreadsheet form at List of remix media/Spreadsheet. These pages are ways to consume it all, or just randomly pick highlights.

If you want to understand some of the core projects of the remix tree, the original branch and main branch are a good place to start. Various well-known arcs include the Crazy Noisy Showdown (part of the main branch), as well as Pico's Bizarre Adventure, the Phoogo Saga, and the Reddit series. It's also a good idea to simply go to a random page and idly browse remices from there.

History

The tree was born on March 14, 2018, when ZiqwerkelSharda created the project [WARRIORS AMV] Despacito :3 out of boredom in study hall. iangecko remixed it into AAAAAAAAAAAAA, and though within a few projects his interest in the tree petered out, turtlehat saw what was happening and decided to pile on; the remix tree remained a tennis game between ZiqwerkelSharda and turtlehat for a while, with occasional contributions by other people such as fishfritters

Eventually, other people in the friendgroup decided to add to it, and the original trio added side projects as well, creating more branches and scattered remices than there were previously, all as smaller offshoots of the main string of projects. Wanting a label, ZiqwerkelSharda, turtlehat, and fishfritters named said main string the main branch, and things continued on like this for a while. Main branch projects became more and more convoluted, eventually evolving into full-on video games, and the three remixers decided to outlaw games from the main branch, and start simplifying projects to make it easier to make new ones. This was kept to de jure but not in spirit, as projects became just as ambitious, just in new ways: the Crazy Noisy Showdown arc got going, and suddenly the remix tree had a full-on story.

2019 started just as that arc ended, and things started to calm down, with Riding Bean Fanart!! \(^O^)/ marking a sudden simplification of projects again, by the hand of turtlehat. Contributions from people besides ZiqwerkelSharda and turtlehat very much tapered out, and it became a straightforward game of tennis again, for the most part. This went on past the anniversary, and through to May, when suddenly the two realized that they were nearing the 100th project in the tree overall, and the 50th in the main branch. They made a few side projects (along with a contribution by TriadHero117), causing the numbers to match up, and thus it happened that Wholly Cow, or "The Time I Played Fifty-Two Hours of Mirror's Edge in One Go" ended the tree with two landmark numbers at once, at least for a while.
